GESI Statement on the mining of metals

The Global eSustainability Initiative (GeSI) is extremely concerned about poor social and environmental practices in some mine sites and within portions of the metals supply chains which supply raw materials to the Information Communications Technology (ICT) industry. Mining activities that fuel conflict are unacceptable.

GeSI member companies are committed to upholding responsible practices in their operations and working with suppliers to meet social and environmental standards.

Madrid -GeSI Members have identified the Universal Mobile Charger as a key standardisation topic. More than one billion new handsets are marketed each year and most of them are replacing older models. Most of the old power supplies need to be destroyed even if still operational since they are not compatible with the new devices.

The Need For a SMART Alliance

The German Addendum to the SMART 2020 report: Enabling a Low Carbon Economy in the Information Age is the third in a series of regional reports. The SMART 2020 report is the most comprehensive and widely cited global analysis on how the ICT can enable other industries to reduce their carbon footprints. Based on the foundation of SMART 2020, several regional reports have been launched, with analysis and recommendations according to specific regions. The German Addendum is the first report to recognize a key element necessary to go forward at the national level: the need for a SMART 2020 Alliance.

Tackling Climate Change

The changes taking place in Earth’s climate, and the effects they will cause, are high on the agenda of every major international organization, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).There are several natural causes of climate change, such as variations in solar radiation, and volcanic activity.
