At the annual general assembly Tim Höttges proclaimed the new, ambitious climate target for the Deutsche Telekom Group for 2021-2030: The company is aiming to achieve a 100 percent use of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2021 and to also reduce other emissions from gas, oil, and other sources of energy. This will lead to their CO2 emissions in 2030 being 90 percent lower compared to 2017. Deutsche Telekom Group are also addressing emissions from the supply chain and that their customers generate when using their products. Their objective is to reduce the CO2 emissions per customer by 25 percent by 2030. In the future, T-Mobile US will also be included in the Group climate protection target.
Windmills generating climate-friendly energy “Climate protection is one of the key challenges of our age. With the new targets for 2021 and 2030, we are taking our responsibility seriously and are acting decisively, quickly and, at the same time, in a sustainable manner,” explains Birgit Klesper, Senior Vice President Group Corporate Responsibility. “In our largest segment – Germany – we will offer our customers a greener network as early as 2020 and, to implement this, we will purchase all of our electricity from renewable sources. This target sends a clear signal to all divisions: we are serious about climate protection.”
The serious effects of climate change on nature, people, and companies are already apparent today. Climate protection must be an integral part of any sustainable business model. What does this mean for Deutsche Telekom? What are the major levers in their company in terms of saving energy and resources sensibly? How can they best use renewable, sustainable energies? How can they ensure that their networks and infrastructure remain stable and powerful, even when subject to more frequently occurring extreme weather events such as storms, flooding, or heat waves?
At the same time, Deutsche Telekom can contribute towards climate protection with its products and services: many of their digital solutions can promote energy-efficient processes and conserve resources for both corporate customers as well as private individuals. Thanks to cloud computing, customers can do without their own servers and storage media for instance. In most cases, this is more resource and energy-efficient than running your own infrastructure as their data centers require up to 80 percent less energy thanks to more effective capacity utilization and less hardware. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can use these solutions to reduce their emissions on average by 21 metric tons of CO2 a year. Products such as smart household devices can help people to contribute towards climate protection in their private lives for instance.
There previous climate target of decreasing Group-wide emissions by 20 percent by 2020 compared to 2008 will continue to apply until next year. And they are on track to meet this target.
