On April 21, GeSI and the ITU hosted a side event to the ‘Means of Implementation and Global Partnership for Sustainable Development’ Post-2015 intergovernmental negotiations which will be held in New York from 20 – 24 April 2015.
The meeting provided the opportunity to present the Call to Action and to bring attention to all stakeholders in the post 2015 process to the importance of ICTs as a cross-cutting catalyst for the achievement and implementation of all three pillars of sustainable development (economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability). ICTs are identified as an element of proposed SDG Goal 17 on the means of implementation (MOI) and as such are essential to the effective deployment of all SDG goals and targets. As well, the ICT sector provides a model of the global partnerships for sustainable development, which this negotiation session is attempting to implement in the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, particularly in developing countries. This event was held in conjunction with the 4th session in 2015 of intergovernmental negotiations for the SDGs, which will be adopted by the UN General Assembly at the SDG Summit scheduled for 25-27 September in New York.
