Understanding the importance of harnessing the ongoing digital revolution to drive global sustainability and human well-being, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has catalysed a global dialogue to set in motion a governance framework to build a digital ecosystem for the planet.
This means mobilising hardware, software and digital infrastructures together with data analytics to generate dynamic, real-time insights that can power various structural transformations are needed to achieve collective sustainability.
On the basis of a collective intelligence process involving 70 experts from the environment and digital sectors, the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) has been identified as one of the 20 key multi-stakeholder processes in 2020 for building a digital ecosystem for the planet. With GeSI's primary goal exploring how Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) can advance sustainability and the SDGs, it has been seen as a "key dialogue and implementation platform with members for advancing a planetary digital ecosystem."
