Even without the threat of climate change, waste management has been a pressing issue globally. Countries have limited land area and cannot afford to commit more land to dump sites and landfills. Waste, either solid or waste water, has huge negative impacts on the environment. Climate change has accelerated the need to find measures to reduce and manage the waste created. Reducing emissions from landfill of biodegradable wastes, as well as from collecting and processing solid waste and waste water has been a priority in the EU and many countries’ national climate plan. Waste is a particularly critical issue for mega cities in Africa and in Latin America. Digital solutions also facilitate renewable energy generation from biowaste.
